gooooaaaalll!

so it's been a few days...but on sunday night spain won the world cup.  i'm pretty sure it's the world cup...mundiales, right?  generally i'm not the biggest fan of sports, but here everyone is insanely into it.  there's no way you can't be into it.  along with the kids from my group (and pretty much the whole city), i watched the game on a little screen in a big plaza.  you couldn't really see everything, but the atmosphere was better than the view.

so spain beat germany 1-0.  my fav is the goalie casillas...if nothing else, that's why you can be into sports!  it was really excited because i've never felt that kind of together-ness in the states.
i think that's the only day i could be considered espanola.

ps- sorry for the lack of updates...turns out everyone else's internet but my roommate's and mine has worked for the past few days.  i'll post soon on the city...there's a lot to take it

Spain actually won the European Championship (not the World Cup). They went in the match as the underdog against a heavly favored German team. One sports caster called it the upset of the century, which seems a little excessive. After all, it's only soccer - sorry, football (or futbol) for the spaniards reading this. I know what you mean about the atmosphere during such events, there is nothing quite like in the US. Several years ago, I was in Honduras during the World Cup and everyone was in the streets celebrating and enjoying the game. That is until the US beat the Honduran team and I got shot at for waving a US flag.

Have fun and please keep posting. We live vicariously through you.

haha...pardon my misinformation about futbol. honestly i don't watch any sports whatsoever so i'm pretty proud i got that much out.

see...but the underdog thing, that's what makes it even better. everyone thinks these big giant germans are going to dominate, then in runs little tiny spaniards who haven't won in 40 years. how could you not love it?

anyways, i think i would have been a little sad (and actually scared) to see them lose.

I think it was great that the Spanish team won. It made it even better that the Germans were favored. I don't follow futbol, or any sport for that matter, but there's not much to do at 2:00 AM except watch sports center. When I'm not our dancing of course.
